What is SEO?

A lot of my clients never heard of SEO before. They don’t even know what it means. So I am sharing some information about SEO, or also known as Search Engine Optimization, here today, hoping that it will help the readers to understand SEO better.

Ok, here we go…

When we talk about SEO, it is mostly targeting at Google. Google is the most used search engine in the world to the point that people will say “I just googled xxx” to represent that he was looking for the information regarding xxx.

In 2008, Google revealed it was indexing 1 trillion unique URLs. The convenience of Internet has made information abundant and it has created a borderless world where we can access so much information that sometimes it is overwhelming. So the only way to find the information you need is through search engine to sort out all the irrelevant websites from the information that you are looking for.

Google is the front runner in the search engine war, accounting for about 65% of total search worldwide.

With such a tremendous amount of websites and data available, Google developed a very sophisticated mathematical formula to identify and sort the “importance” of the websites in regards to the search term, or known as keywords.

SEO, or search engine optimization, is a method that optimizes the whole website from HTML coding, jQuery coding, content, to inbound links (and many more which I won’t list out individually) to meet the requirements of Google in order to increase the PageRank (translation: the importance of your website).

The wrong perception is the website owners want to drive traffic to their websites. But SEO is not magic because it can’t make your website to appear on top of the search result in everything an user is searching for. SEO is a method that targets specific keywords to optimized your website to ensure that the website to have a better PageRank, and the keywords are those related to your website, such as “hotel in KL”, “security system” and etc.

There are two schools of SEO: White Hat SEO and Black Hat SEO.

White Hat SEO is an organic way to optimize the website, and it is a method that we strongly encourage. It is the process and method of optimizing the codes, contents and etc for those specific keywords.

Black Hat SEO, also known as many things, such as SEO Hack, are the easiest and fastest way to push up the Google PageRank for a website. Methods being used are commonly keyword stuffing or buying into link farm. In the shortest time, the website will appear into the top ten search result.

But once Google found out (trust me, they will find out very fast if your website is using Black Hat SEO method), your website will be banned from Google and you will not appear onto the search result.

At Zymora Technologies, we do not practice Black Hat SEO.

As mentioned before, White Hat SEO is an organic way to increase and improve a website’s PageRank. In most common case, a website will take some time to increase their ranking in search result. One of our clients had their website optimized for one keyword, and in 2 months time, their website has improved their ranking from 624 to 16 against that keyword.

(Translation: that means when an user is searching for that keyword, the website will appear on the 16th instead of 624th in the search result)

SEO is a continuous progress and not a one time off project. If your website is ranked 1st, it is a continuous effort to maintain the website as first.

The website search ranking is a very competitive market where everyone is fighting to appear on top. So in order to stay competitive, it’s important to continuously optimize the website in order to stay in the game.

SEO is not magic. But if you want to stay competitive in the online market, then you should really consider incorporating SEO into your website and also develop an online marketing strategy.

With the availability of Internet, there is no reason to confine your business to your geographical region. If you are a clothing manufacturer or retailer, you can sell overseas. And the best thing is that you don’t even need a passport in order to sell your products or services overseas.

But how do you sell overseas? The answer is SEO; so that your potential clients can find you online.
